This hypothesis states that all semiotic modes serve three metafunctions in order to function as a full system of communication (cf. Kress and van Leeuwen 1996: 40). These metafunctions organize the various elements and systems that constitute a mode into three distinct domains of meaning, i.e. the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual metafunction.
