apical dominance A condition in plants where the stem apex prevents the development of lateral branches near the apex. It is controlled by auxins produced at the apical bud. Close to the bud, the auxin concentration is high and inhibits lateral growth; further back, the …

apical dominance [ ā ′pĭ-kəl, ăp ′ĭ- ] Inhibition of the growth of lateral buds by the terminal bud of a plant shoot. In most plants, apical dominance results from the release of auxin by the apical meristem.

Auxin, or indoleacetic acid, from the apex is implicated in inhibiting the growth of the axillary meristems (among other things). This solves a major problem with apical dominance as a mechanism for modulating shoot architecture. Under this model, if a vigorous apex exports auxin and inhibits the buds below it, apical dominance would be strong under favourable conditions, restricting the plant's capacity to produce branches despite resource abundance. Apical dominance is a type of growth habit in woody and herbaceous plants where an apical bud (or a bud at the apex typically the top) secretes growth hormones down into the plant that dictates the growth habit for the entire plant. In Plants What Is Apical Dominance In plants, it is a phenomenon wherein a main shoot dominates, inhibiting the outgrowth of other shoots. The main shoot tip loss or shoot tip damage caused by herbivory in plants with a strong apical dominance results in the outgrowth of axillary buds into branches.

The main shoot tip loss or shoot tip damage caused by herbivory in plants with a strong apical dominance results in the outgrowth of axillary buds into branches. 2021-03-08 · For almost a century, auxin had been well-known as the master regulator of apical dominance. Recently, however, sugars were shown to be the initial regulator of apical dominance, while strigolactones (SLs) and cytokinins (CKs) act downstream of auxin to control bud outgrowth. However, the interactions of the different pathways have remained outstanding questions.

The physiological mechanism of apical dominance is assumed to follow the direct hypothesis of auxin action, which was originally proposed during the 1930's. This hypothesis indicates that the plant hormone auxin (IAA), produced in the apical meristem and young leaves, directly inhibits axillary bud … 2020-02-28 PDF | Barbier et al. give a quick guide to apical dominance, whereby a plant's main shoot dominates and inhibits the outgrowth of other shoots.
